General Updates and Kids Club

This past Saturday was National Sew A Jelly Roll Day. This was a great success at our shop, many of you came in and picked out a new roll for yourself and we had 5 ladies come in and use our classroom for the day to work on their jelly roll projects, they put our design walls to good use laying out their quilts.

We also had our kickoff for our Bag of the Month Club. It went really smoothly with everyone that attended finishing both of the projects and each one of them also won a prize. Some of the prizes were donated to us by Emmaline and Trendtex and the othres were gifts from our shop. All in all it was a great couple of days and I am really excited for the next club sessions!

Harvest Hop is this weekend and Carrie and I spent some time today changing up some displays at the store. Whcih bascially means we came up with a plan, and moved a lot of fabric to new homes in the shop, with some of it being moved 6 times before we are happy with its location and some of it being a simple 1 time move. In the end it now looks fresh and invting again.

Fat Quarter Friday is taking place this week as well and Taylor and Shay have been hard at work cutting Fat Quarters so that there will be a wide variety to choose from. In case you missed it previously, select fat quarters (we will have a basket of selected ones) will be $2.50 each of 12 for $25.00.

On October 7 the Gypsy Wife Ladies will be getting together to show off their progress on their Quilts. So if you were sewing along mark this date on your calendar and check out my Facebook Post for details.

Thursday, October 17 is our next Chicken Feed Evening so mark that on yuor calendars, we will be doing a little presentation on Patterns, copywrite, and free vs paid for. There will also be several Christmas Gift ideas both handmade and Quilty themed on display to get your creative juices flowing.

Now for the details of the Kids Club. Last year Tammy and Carrie ran a Kids Sewing Club. It took place once a month on a Friday afternoon and kids aged 10-14 were welcome to come and learn the basics of sewing. They made a tote bag, a pillow case, and a quilt. Each of them got to choose their own fabrics, and learned about the importance of seam allowances, sewing straight, cutting, safety with the tools and machines and more. We are running it again this year, but will be doing it on Saturdays instead.
This year the club will run the second Saturday of every month starting October 12 and running through May with the exception of January. Sessions will run from 9am-noon.
For the classes you will need to bring
-a sewing machine in good working order (we do have some available for use at the shop but you would need to let us know ahead of time if you would like to use one)
-fabric scissors
-4 bobbins
-a seam ripper
-some months may need additional supplies but this will be brought to your attention beforehand.
We do have basic notion kits available for purchase for this class as well.
The cost for the club is $40 per session and the fabrics are included in this price. Spots are limited for this class so you need to sign up quickly.
There will be no blog this week Friday.
Have a great week,
Kayla

Harvest Hop and Jelly Roll Day Details

Harvest Hop 2019 is next weekend, so tonight I just have a little bit of a schedule of what will be happening in our shop for that, as well as a reminder of some of the rules.
Thursday, September 26: First day of the Harvest Hop. We will open at 10am. We will have 3 information sessions in our classroom on Thursday, each about 10-15 minutes long.
At 11am the information session will be on Rulers and their importance.
At 2pm there will be one on the guts of your project
At 4 pm we will repeat the Ruler talk.
We will be open until 7pm Thursday Evening.
Friday, September 27 we will open at 10am and close at 5pm. This is also the last Friday of the month and so it is also Fat Quarter Friday. Select Fat Quarters will be $2.50 each or buy 12 for $25.00.
Saturday, September 28 is the last day of Shop Hop and we will be open from 10am-4pm.
Names for the sewing machine, gift baskets and door prize winners will be drawn on the weekend. We will begin calling all those who won prizes from our shop on Monday, September 30.

Before you begin your shopping trip check that you have filled out your name and phone number on your passport, if there is no phone number we cannot call you to tell you about your prize winnings.
Also the hours that each shop is open varies, so make sure you check with each store before shopping. Our hours for the event are:
Thursday, 10am-7pm
Friday, 10am-5pm
Saturday, 10am-4pm
Don't forget to bring your Passport with you when you shop.
Be sure to visit each of the 6 shops participating and spend a minimum of $5 at each shop, and present your passport to get stamped.
The last store you visit will keep your Passport for the draws on the weekend.

Don't rush yourself, make it a fun day out either by yourself or with friends. It is supposed to be a fun weekend full of fun and inspiration! And we have lots of new fabrics, samples and kits in our shop for you to check out!
We have a cafe in our building that serves coffee, tea, and specialty drinks. They have smoothies, sandwiches, salads and a soup of the day, and if you come on Friday there is pie as well. So be sure to check them out as well.

Tomorrow is National Sew a Jelly Roll Day. Because it is about actually sewing a jelly roll and not just buying new ones to store on your shelf we have decided to do a different kind of sale this year.
We have a good number of Jelly Rolls for sale and you can buy them at a 25% discount tomorrow, but there is a catch. You have to show us the pattern you are planning on using to get the discount on the jelly roll. It can be one of the 5 free patterns we will have available in the shop tomorrow, it can be a pattern off the pattern wall or it can be one you bring from home, we just want to see what you have planned. It can be a quilt, a rug, a bag we don't mind, it just has to be a sewing project involving a Jelly Roll. As an added incentive we will add another bonus on to this. Keep the receipt as proof of purchase and if you bring in your finished Jelly Roll Project before October 31 with the receipt as proof of that jelly roll being purchased on September 21 at our shop we will give 25% off your purchase of a Layer Cake, Jelly Roll or Charm Pack that day.
I am hoping to work on a jelly roll quilt for a friend tomorrow evening, hopefully the rest of the day goes according to plan and that works out.
Have a great weekend,
Kayla

September Events

As I am sure you are well aware this weekend is a long one, and with it comes the start of September. In my house that means back to school, routines, and schedules, and more time for sewing yay! For the shop it means the start of many of our clubs and several events.
We have decided to kick the month off with a Back to School and Sewing Event. From Tuesday September 3-Saturday September 7, we will have a jar of colored pencils available to choose from. Each pencil will have a different discount or coupon on it, some of the coupons include 40% off your purchase, 15% off your favorite item, free mini charm, and more. The coupons are only good for the current purchase you are making.
The following week, Tuesday, September 10 is the first day of the Accuquilt GO! Club. This is always a fun club in which you learn more about the Accuquilt Machine and how to get the most from each Die.
September 13 &14 we have Susan Madu of Modern Blended Quilts coming to do 2 workshops and a trunk show. The workshops are for a pillow and for a quilt, one will take place each day, and the trunk show will take place on Friday Evening.
September 19 and 20 is the kick off to our Bag Clubs for the year. We will be making mesh bags and a thread Organizer, both are patterns from By Annie, and we have received some gifts from some of our distributors to hand out at this event.
Saturday, September 21 is National Sew A Jelly Roll Day, so be sure to set some time aside for this, what better excuse to sew than it being a national day specifically set aside just for sewing a jelly roll. We will have free patterns available in store if you come in on this date, as well as specials and a door prize.
The following weekend is Harvest Hop, the annual shop hop event for the shops in Coaldale and Lethbridge. Early registration ends September 14 so be sure to come in store before than to get your passport, if you cannot come in store give us a call or send us an email and we will work something our for you.
That brings us to the end of September!
We hope to see you in our shop for one or more of these events, coming to these is great for inspiration and motivation.
Do you have any big plans for the long weekend?
I am currently working on Christmas Quilts for my 4 boys, but am also planning to spend tomorrow and Monday just hanging out with them before it is Back to School on Tuesday.

Harvest Hop 2019

Plans are underway for this years edition of the Harvest Hop. As usual the Shop Hop event will take place the last weekend in September. This year the dates work out to be Thursday, September 26, Friday the 27th and Saturday, September 28. In addition to our shop there will be 5 other shops participating, Fabric Fusion, Finely Quilted, Lethbridge Sewing Center, Sewing Lane, and Village Quilts.
Early Registration has begun and will continue until September 7. To register stop in at any of the 6 shops and let them know you would like to sign up for the Harvest Hop. Once you have registered (which is free by the way) you will receive your passport for the hop.

When the dates of the Harvest Hop arrive you will need to take your Passport to each oft the 6 stores, and spend a minimum of $5. This purchase will earn you a stamp on your passport. The last store that you shop at will keep your passport and at the end of the weekend, all the shops will get together and we will draw some prize winners.

Up for grabs this year is a grand prize of a sewing machine, I haven't heard what model yet but will post a photo to Facebook when I do, a large gift basket from each store (ours is valued at $400) and hundreds of door prizes.

We have sent out requests to nearly all of our Fabric and Notion Distributors asking them to sponsor the event and some boxes of goodies have already begun to arrive, they are being very generous this year! Below is a photo of all the prizes our shop had for last years Harvest Hop, lots of fabric bundles and precuts, some patterns, some bag hardware kits, cutting mats, notion sets and more.

This happens to be a long weekend, so we will be closed on Monday.
Do you have any fun plans? It is my sons birthday on Tuesday and so I will be doing some birthday gift shopping, party planning, and cupcake baking, and hopefully get in some time at my parents lake as well.

Busy Weeks

The last few days have been extra busy for Esther and it won't be slowing down for a little while either. She led the first sessions of the Bag of The Month Club, plus 2 other classes, she went to Calgary to pick up our new Aurifil Stand, and today she went to the Border to pick up all the boxes that Accuquilt sent us for our trunk show coming up next week.
S
The Bag Club went great and the ladies that signed up left with a mesh zipper pouch, and an ID pouch with a zipper pocket and a lanyard to make for easy carrying. Next month is the Bag Workshop, and we can still fit you in if your are interested but have not signed up yet.
S
Our newest Aurifil stand (number 3) was picked up yesterday by Esther, and this morning her and I set it up, and started filling it, when Carrie got to the store she jumped in and we got all three stands pretty well organized. We are just waiting for some 40 weight small spools that were back ordered, but these should be here in about a week and a half. Our new stand is all small spools as we wanted to have a wide variety of colors in the 50 and 40 weights available. This stand got here just in time for our Aurifil Presentation that is just around the corner. There will actually be two presentations, one in the afternoon and one in the evening of Tuesday, October 2. The presentation will be given by the President of Aurifil and their Director of Marketing.  If you haven't yet registered to attend this, do so soon. It will be very informative and will show you how important thread really is.
The Accuquilt Trunk Show starts on Tuesday. I have mentioned this show a few times but haven't gone into a lot of detail about it. Esther picked up an entire pallet of boxes, which contain quilts, product and gifts for the Trunk Show. I for one can't wait to see what all the boxes contain.
We will have the Trunk Show set up in our main floor classroom from September 25-29. Their will be quilts from Accuquilt displayed, all three of the Systems will be set up, and we will do demos on them. We will also give you a chance to try them out, we have lots of fabric available to chop up.
S
There will be gifts available with each purchase of a machine or major bundles. The Baby Go's are on special next week as well. We will also have some draws and there will be some freebies as well, so come on out to see what these machines can do.
In addition to the Accuquilt Trunk Show, it is also Shop Hop Next weekend. This is always a fun weekend with so many quilters coming through in such a small space of time. I am sad to have to miss the majority of the weekend, due to a work thing I have to attend with my husband, but I am excited to go away with him for a couple days with no kids.
A new shipment of Emmaline Hardware came yesterday, this shipment contains her latest releases as well as everything that needed to be re-ordered because we were running low on inventory after the bag classes this past weekend.
A shipment of fabric came today as well. Another 6 boxes. I didn't get a chance to see what was inside but it was whispered to me that it is supposed to be Art Gallery, so I will definitely be checking them out tomorrow!
Our first Phd Class session yesterday went really well, and everyone commented that it was nice to be getting some of these older projects finished and off their mind. The next one goes tomorrow and I am excited to see the next batch of projects half done.
As a side note and something that made our day, on Wednesday, Moda mentioned us on their blog and shared a photo of the Moda Blockheads we have been doing. That in addition to Chris W Designs including a photo of Kayla's backpack in her email last week made us feel pretty special.
We love to see what you create with fabric you purchase from Chicken Feed, so tag us in your photos!

Shop Hop 2018

The annual Harvest Hop is only two weeks away!
This year there are 6 shops participating: Chicken Feed Quilts, Finely Quilted, Fabric Fusion, Lethbridge Sewing Center, Sewing Lane, and Village Quilts.
S
Esther and I have been planning out the demos that we will be doing in the store throughout the weekend. So far we have a few Creative Grids Rulers that we want to share with you, and because our Accuquilt Trunk Show overlaps the Shop Hop we will be doing demos on the Go! Systems as well. We also have some nifty new notions that we absolutely love and we will have them set up in the classroom as well so you can see what they do and why we love them so much. Our demos do not have set times, we will run them whenever people wish to see them.
All of our fantastic wholesale companies have been sending us some great door prizes and we will be busy these next two weeks packaging them up and getting them ready to display during the event. Last year we had close to 50 door prizes to give out, we haven’t counted this years yet but I’m sure we will have close to that agin if not more!
The passport gifts are also ready to go. Now the question is have you got your passport yet?
S
Pre-Registration ends this Saturday. You will need a passport to get entered into all the fantastic giveaways and draws. as well as to get your gift at each store. While there is no cost to register, there is a minimum purchase of $5 at each store during the event to get your passport stamped and receive your gift.
This is always a fun weekend, so be sure to come visit us in store or call to get your passport.

Fall Events

For the past few weeks Esther and I have been finalizing the details on the fall events, clubs and classes that will be taking place in our shop this fall. We will send out a couple emails with them all listed for you later today, if you have signed up for emails but haven't been getting them check your spam, as we have heard from some people that this is where they found theirs.
S
The first class on the calendar is the Mini Pineapple make and take on August 30, there is still a few spots left in this class. We have kits available for the class, and it finishes up at 22" square.
The next class is a Laura Heine Collage Class on September 8. I have taught this class several times in the past year, and it is always fun and productive. You can do any of the Laura Heine patterns and learn a few tips and tricks along the way. There is seats open, and we need to have at least one more person register by August 31, or we will have to re-schedule this. Some prep work required, so if you are interested sign up soon. Class fee is $40 and supplies are an additional cost.
Esther's Violet Craft Paper Piecing Class is a four week session that begins on Wednesday, September 12 and takes place in the evenings. In this class you are free to do any of the Violet Craft Paper Pieced patterns, and Esther will share with you some tips and tricks to help you create your own masterpiece! Cost is $80 plus supplies.
We have three different clubs taking place this year.
GO Club which has been an ongoing club in the shop for several years will once again take place the second Tuesday of every month. The fee for this one is $80 and it runs from September through May. In this club you can share tips with each other and use a variety of GO dies over the season.
The PhD Club is a new club that has been designed to motivate you to finish off some of those projects that are half done. There is a weekday and a Saturday session available to join. Each sew day you will bring a project of yours that is incomplete, work on it for the day and set a goal for yourself to have done by the next months sew day, whether it a a few more blocks, the whole top, or binding it that is up you. I will record your goal, if your homework is not done you will pay a penalty of $10, if you are done you will get an entry into the bucket for the jackpot at the end of the year. There is no class fee, and you are able to join just one session or both of them. The more people that join the more fun it will be! This club runs September-May, but we will skip December.
S
The third club is also a new one, it is the Bag of the Month Club, which I have mentioned several times over the summer. We still have some spots available in both the Tuesday and Saturday sessions and would love to have more people join us to make this club even more fun. Esther finished up one of the September projects this week, an ID lanyard, which turned out really cute and is already being put to good use by Carrie. Each month we will share tips and tricks on various parts of bag making, interfacing, different fabric choices, hardware, and accenting. This club is great for beginner bag sewists and will be fun for experienced bagineers!
S
If you have checked out our events page recently, you will have seen that there is several different ones happening this fall.
First up is National Sew a Jelly Roll Day, on Saturday, September 15.  The purpose of this day is for you to sew a jelly roll, it doesn't matter what you make, just that you pull out a jelly roll and sew with it. We will be having a Jelly Roll Race in store that day, and stitch off is at 10:30am. We will also have jelly roll patterns, and jelly rolls on sale that day. There will also be giveaways, draws and freebies so come in store for this fun event, and be sure to register yourself for the race! Watch our Instagram page next week for some Jelly Roll Inspiration. Also start going through your Moda Jelly Roll stash and pull out the oldest one you own. We will be having a fun little contest with this as well.
Our Accuquilt Travelling Trunk show arrives on Monday September, 24. There will be projects made with the Accuquilt Dies and we will be doing demos all week on this amazing cutting system!
Later that week is the Annual Harvest Hop, pre-registration has already started for this, and ends on September 15. Our prizes from our distributors have started trickling in, and we have our gifts for getting your passport stamped all ready to go. The Hop runs September 27-29.
Tuesday, October 2 we will be having an Aurifil Information Session in our store. The President of Aurifil as well as the Director of Marketing will be coming to our store to do a presentation on all things Aurifil, as well as hand out some swag! There are two time slots available, one at 3pm and the second at 7pm. There is a $5 fee to hold your place for this presentation, which will be given back to you after the event as Chicken Feed Cash to spend that day.
I have frequently mentioned the Bag Workshop and Trunk show which is taking place October 18-20. We would love to have a few more people join us for this. The workshop is beginner friendly, so don't be intimidated if you have never made a bag before. We will help you through the process! The workshop and the trunk show are two separate events and you may attend both or either if them. Even if you don't sew bag the Trunk show would still be a fun evening out with friends!
S
For our final event of the year we will be hosting a Zen Chic travelling Trunk show in partnership with Trend Tex fabrics. This will take place December 3-8. We will have a games evening on December 4, focusing on  Zen Chic. There will also be a contest to enter your projects made with Zen Chic fabrics. The projects must be brought in store by November 30, contain at least 75% Zen Chic fabric, and can be a quilt, wall hanging, topper or bag. We have had some representatives from Trend Tex offer to judge the entries, but don't be intimated as they are not quilters and are not critical at all!
If you need some days set aside to make your Zen Chic project feel free to join the PhD club to finish one off, or join the Go or Bag Club to make a new project using Zen Chic!
These classes, clubs and events all have limited spaces available (aside from Shop Hop) and you need to be registered ahead of time to attend. To sign up, call the store, send us an email, or better yet come in store and see all the new fabric that arrives every week!
