New Fabrics

Happy Monday, here in Coaldale we are having a snow day. There was quite the snowstorm this weekend with plenty of wind and snowing and it left roads and yards full of drifts. My boys are home from school for the day and are thrilled that there is a huge snowpile made in the church parking lot that is perfect for sledding.

We have recieved lots of new fabrics in the past couple weeks at the shop, so I thought I would share those with you today. Yardage is available for all these collections now and we are working on getting precuts and fat quarter bundles cut and packaged.

From Art Gallery we have Picturesque and Serenity Fusion.

As quoted from the Art Gallery Site: Katarina Roccella channels her inner William Morris in her latest collection, Picturesque! Capturing traditional 19th-century European designs with lush florals and contrasting embellishments.

This sums up the collection perfectly. Here is a link to the project look book which has lots of inspiration for what you could make with these fabrics.

Serenity Fusion is a collection of low volume prints in creams and blues and is calming just to look at!

From Riley Blake we have this really fun collection called Wild At Heart. I started a quilt on Saturday for one of my boys with it, but it will be a sample in the shop first and we will have kits available for it as well. The pattern I am using is called One Way and I am doing the version using all prints rather than every other block being a solid. I did add a few grunges to break it up a little.

From Hoffman the Mosaic Masterpiece Tile Fabrics by Cheryl Lynch have arrived. These fabrics are printed to look like little 3/8" tiles and are perfect for the Mosaic quilts. We have patterns on order for these (they release later this month, and should be here early December). They would also  make really fun backgrounds, or borders for quilts too!

From Moda we have Balboa by Sherri and Chelsi. I was so excited for this collection to arrive, that when it came Carrie didn't even tell me, but let me discover it two days later when I went in to work! The colors in this one are so fun and different from their previous collections, with the added Orchid Purple.
My quilt is finished and ready to hang in the shop tomorrow!

Solana by Robin Pickens for Moda arrived Friday afternoon at the shop, and we hope to get it unboxed, priced and on display this week!

From Marcus Fabrics we have Blushing Dots by Laura Berringer. I made a baby quilt with it and I love how cute it turned out. Kits for this one will be ready as soon as the pattern books arrive, we sold out of them before we could put them in the kit.

Which fabrics are your favorite?
Click on any of the photos to shop the collection or visit our website by clicking on the link below.
We will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 in honor of Remembrance Day.
Carrie will be here on Thursday with another post on the Midnight Clear Block Of the Month.
Have a great week, we are hoping the snow sticks around so we can take the boys sledding on Wednesday.

Designer Bolts Explained

MSSA few weeks ago we got what are called Designer Bolts in the store. Sitting on the shelf they look unusual but not a lot of people understand what they are and why we like them so much. Because we currently have two collections of these Designer Bolts and a couple more lines on the way, I thought I would explain them a little. The fabric is printed in Fat Quarters and the two collections we currently have in store both have 8 Fat Quarters per bolts printed in 2 meter repeats. So the line has 33 prints in 5 bolts, 1 full bolt of the main print and 4 bolts of 8 fat quarters each containing the coordinates.
The designers of these collections have also been designing patterns that not only work well for all Fat Quarters but especially for these bolts. The patterns have special cutting instructions which take advantage of how the fabric is printed that results in less cuts, fewer seams, and quicker quilts.
S
We love Designer Bolts because we can get a full collection and not worry about how much space it will take up, 5 bolts take up a lot less room than 33 bolts do. Also rather than cutting and folding 33 fat quarters we can make 4 or 5 cuts, and give you a complete Fat Quarter bundle. This also means there is fewer creases for you to iron out before you begin your project.
S
Both collections that we currently have are called All A Twitter by Kari Carr, one is in the cooler color tones and the other in the warmer tones, and already some of the bolts are getting quite low.
New in store today are Color Master Fat Quarter Bundles that came in from Art Gallery Fabrics. Each box contains 10 Fat Quarters in one color story, and there are 12 different ones to choose from. There are only 4 of each left so if these interest you don't wait too long.
We were asked to do some Creative Grids Rulers at a retreat this weekend and as usual I left my planning until the last minute so I better go and do some prep work for that.
Have a great weekend,
Kayla

Batik Presentation Recap

This past Wednesday we had a total of 60 ladies come to Chicken Feed Quilts for a presentation on Hoffman Batiks.
S
During the presentation Rob gave us a little bit of history into how Rube Hoffman started Hoffman Fabrics, and how his two sons expanded the company and also added batiks. He explained the difference between quilting cottons, and batiks, mainly that batiks have a tighter weave, are dyed, that they are preshrunk, do not fray, and are all done by hand.

S
S
We were also told about how Hoffman has installed a water treatment facility in their factory in Bali which filters and tests all water that was used in the extensive process, before they send it back out into the rivers. He also told of us how the designers and the craftsman work together to bring forth the beautiful fabrics.
S
Not only does Hoffman make the classic Batiks they have also brought out a modern line of batiks. These fabrics are made using the same quality of materials and craftsmanship, but just skip the step that gives the mottled colors. They also have started producing digital prints, which have been very popular at our store.
S
After Rob gave us all this information he had a small trunk show for us, he had several samples from Hoffman, as well as the ones the the staff at Chicken Feed Quilts have made.
S
At the end of the show all the ladies were given a roll of fabric, a free pattern, and a challenge: to make something with Hoffman batiks and the free pattern and to bring it in store for judging between June 15 and July 1. The winner will receive a basket of goodies courtesy of Hoffman California!
To cap off the event everyone was given the opportunity to do some shopping!
S
Thank you to all who were able to make it out to the event, and to Rob from Trendtex for all the information, displays of beautiful fabrics and quilts, as well as for the prizes and gifts!
For all those who were not able to attend, we do hope to do another session in the fall.

Every week at Chicken Feed Quilts we have a different unadvertised special. Some of our previous ones have included sales on flannels and specific collections of fabric, buy one get one 50% off books, patterns, precuts, gift cards and draw entries. Next week Esther is going on a vacation and leaving me in charge, so in addition to our unadvertised special we will be having daily deals!
Come in store to see what these specials are, and also to see all the new fabrics. We have received shipping confirmations from four different companies today, so there will be lots of new fabrics and notions to check out next week!
