Garden Sampler BOM Month 12 and Finishing

 

It is December already! This year has flown by! 

With the start of a new month, it is time to pull the Block of the Month projects out. This month we have the last block of our Garden Sampler as well as finishing. The sashing in this quilt is quite intensive, and I, through the midst of vacations, working, and renovations was only able to get one section of sashing done and one cornerstone block finished to show you how I would do it. Now lets jump in to Block 12!

Below are my cut pieces, labeled with my alphabitties to keep them straight. 

I cut all my pieces according to the pattern this time.

I guess I really got into the zone.

For all the flip-and-stitch corners I used my Diagonal seam tape, which I will demonstrate below in the sashing components. 

The Components

The center of this block is constructed in a simple 9-patch fashion. 

After that I simply put the outer edges on my block and it is complete!

And how cute is it?

Block 12

Once that is done it is time to start on the sashing.

The cutting for the sashing looks quite daunting, my stripology ruler was a real time saver here. 
The ruler has slits at every 1/2" that you can put your cutter into. There is also a mark on each 1.5" cut and each 2.5" cut, which are the most common cuts needed, and it takes the math out of the process.

The pieces for the sashing

I labelled my piece with alphabitties and wonder clips. For the small pieces that I needed to cut approximately 240 pieces of I used a ziploc bag and wonder clipped the letter to the top of the bag.

First we have to make the frame around all the blocks, I cut these at 2" instead of the 1.5" so that I could be sure that I could square my blocks up to 12.5"

I then took my 12.5" square ruler, found the center of my square and the ruler, and trimmed all 4 sides.

After the sashing frame we need to do a navy frame. On one of the edges there is a flip-and-stitch corner. I used my diagonal seam tape for this.

Once you have the navy frame on play around with the layout for a while until you are happy with it. It does not need to be exactly in the same order as the pattern, but what makes you happy and love it.

This is the layout I settled with.

Next we need to make our cornerstone flowers. Each Flower is 4 squares with all 4 corners

 flip-and-stitched, one with a navy, and three with a background. Again I used my Diagonal Seam Tape.

Trim 1/4" away from all the seams and press. 

Then sew into a 4-patch with all the navy pieces in the center.

How cute is this cornerstone flower?1? I just love it!!!

Next is the sashing section, the green rectangles all have 3 flip-and-stitch corners. Once these leaves are made join two together, with a square in between. Make sure that the side with 2 flip-and-stitches goes toward the square. Then attach a background too each side and you are done the section. 

That's as far as I was able to get this week. The outer border also is just flip-and-stitches.

Garden Sampler BOM: Month 11

 

It is already November! this year is flying by. 

We are on Block 11 of our Garden Sampler BOM, which means we are making the rosemary block. I made a couple adjustments in the cutting this month. Everywhere that the pattern asked for an 1/8, I rounded up to the nearest quarter. This gave me extra trimming room on my HST, 

The Pieces

For these Half Square Triangles I tried a little bit of a different squaring method, I still used my 4-in-1 HST ruler, but I pressed my triangles first, then found the appropriate markings on my ruler to trim. 
Trim up the side and top, then flip your block and ruler and trim again.

On the big pink HST we need to add Flip and Stitch pieces, for those I used my diagonal seam tape. 

The Components

This block uses a little different method of putting the final block together, but we have done it before. I drew a box around my center block, 1/4" away from each edge so that I knew when to start and stop my seams. 

And now we have Block 11! I love how this block turned out, and I am so excited to put my blocks together next month. There is a lot of piecing involved in the sashing and we still have one more block to make, so that might be a two part blog so that I don't overwhelm you, and maybe to give me a bit more time to sew. 

Now I better get back to work getting everything done that I need to before I take off to Florida with my husband and with Kayla and her family next week.

Garden Sampler BOM: Block 10

 It is the beginning of a new month, and time to pull out our block of the month projects again. 

I am glad to be back in my sewing room after the wedding, my honeymoon and then getting all settled in. My new husband nicely took me to my parents to pick up my sewing room just a few days after we made it back home. It was good to pull out just one block to get into it again, so this was perfect.

We are already on Block 10 of our sampler, which means we are so close to being done.

My Cut Pieces

I found this block nice and simple, just a few flip and stitches and the block is ready to be put together. 
I stitched all my corners onto the big blue square before cutting and pressing. Be sure to watch the placement of the colors and the angle you sew at to make sure they go the right way.

The Components

That is all for this block, it really is just a few flip and stitches and then piecing it together.

I just love how this block turned out. Probably because it is mostly blue, and I really like blue. 

I can't wait to get my quilt put together, we will see if I can wait until December to put it all together, or if I'm going to work ahead and get it finished or not.

Garden Sampler BOM: Block 9

 It is the beginning of a new month and time to pull out those Block of the Month projects again. 

We are in September already, which means back to school and back to a normal routine for many people. How do you feel about back to school? September for me means that my wedding is so close!!! It is Wedding Month!!! So for me September is a bunch of last minute plans, last minute decorating, showers, and preparing to get married and move out. Today I was off to Calgary to pick up my dress! But I did sneak a bit of time in to get my block finished. 

For this block I changed the cutting a little bit, the only thing I changed is where it had 3/8" I changed that to 1/2" just so I'd have a bit more room to square up my HST

The Pieces

I found that piecing this block was not too difficult, there is a couple HSTs and a couple flip and stitches, which I used my Diagonal Seam Tape for.

For the Half Square Triangles I used my 4-in-1 HST ruler to square them up, but in my excitement to get the block finished I forgot to take pictures of how I used the ruler this time, oops.

Once you have the components made this block just has a simple nine-patch construction and the block is finished!

Now that I have this block finished, I am going back to my decorations and seating chart to get everything ready and off my mind. This block was a good break, and a good distraction for a few minutes though. Have you been keeping up? Is your sewing room a good break and distraction from the craziness of life for you?

Garden Sampler BOM: Block 8

 It is August already!! I am sitting here trying to decide if I'm happy with how fast this summer is going or not. I am a little bit sad because summer is my absolute favourite time of the year, I will take all the heat and sunshine I can get. On the other hand I am super excited because my wedding is coming up super fast, so I am beyond excited for September to get here!!!

Anyways, it being a new month means it is time to pull the block of the month projects out again. I was worried I wasn't going to get my block done with all the waterskiing and wedding planning, but I carved out some time today to make it. 

This block is pretty simple, just a couple flip and stitches and a nine-patch assembly and it is finished. 

Below are my cut and labeled pieces. 

I just cut and labeled as the book said. 

Now that we are this far, I am super glad that I cut a sample of my fabrics as I used them and put them with the coordinating fabric chart at the beginning of the book, it makes pulling and cutting my fabrics each month so much easier. 

For the flip and stitch corners I used my Diagonal Seam Tape from CluckCluckSew. I love this product, it makes these flip and stitches so much easier and more accurate for me. 

The Components

When doing the nine patch assembly, be sure to watch where you are going to stitch on the flip and stitch corners, so you do not lose the star points in the center of the block.

See in the picture above how the seams all cross over eachother, I know when I go to press it I will have a nice clean point there. 

My Block 8

I am getting so excited to see all these blocks together in my finished quilt. I am having to stop myself from just making the rest of the blocks and finishing it up.

Garden Sampler BOM: Month 7

 It is the beginning of another month! This year has been going by way to fast, and June seemed to slip away from me. 

I quickly sewed up my block for this month this morning, remembering I had to blog about it this afternoon. It was a good thing this block was not too difficult of time consuming. It is just a few flip and stitches, with the partial seam around the center square again.

I really like to chain piece, so I chain pieced all my flip and stitch corners, and just used my diagonal seam tape to make sure i was sewing straight through the middle. By chain piecing I could almost sew all the flip and stitches without trimming and ironing except for one unit, where the flip and stitches intersect to create a point in the block.

This one I had to trim and press before attaching the second flip and stitch, since the squares are meant to overlap to make a point in the block.

The components

To put the square in the center we need to do a partial seam, to do this I drew a 1/4" line on all sides of the back of my square, so that I would know where to stop stitching. 

Then we just have to keep putting our 4 petal units around the center square until we complete our block as shown below. 

And that is our block for this month. It was good for me to make this block this month, as I haven't done much sewing since I've been enjoying the weather out on the lake.

Garden Sampler BOM: Month 6

 We are already in June! Crazy to think how fast this year is going by. 

It being June means it is time to pull out those Block of the Month projects again. We are here again with the Garden Sampler block of the month to make the Dill block. 

In comparison to the previous couple blocks, this one seemed simple. All that is needed to be done in this block is a few flip and stitch corners. I didn't even have to adjust any of the cutting which is strange for me.

To make my flip and stitch corners I used my Diagonal Seam Tape from Cluck Cluck Sew.

For the petal unit, the only thing to watch out for, is to make sure you have all those flipped corners facing the right way, in order to get the proper look. I did double check the diagram as I did mine, to make sure I had the background and center triangles in the right corners.

My Block 6! 

I really do love the look of this block, even though I am really not a green person, I think it turned out well. IT was also refreshing to have a simple, straight forward block, as I sat down to make it last night quickly before I went to bed.

Garden Sampler BOM: Month 5

 It is the beginning of May. That seems crazy, these months are flying by, and personally I hope they continue to do so. In my mind September can't come fast enough. 😂 I've been busy wedding planning, enjoying the warmer weather and off course doing a bit of waterskiing. With the warmer weather we have been having I'm sure everyone has been outside enjoying the weather, but it is time to pull out all of the block of the months and get those blocks done.

We are working on the fifth block of our Garden Sampler. This block was fun, and I tried a new technique which I would've avoided if it wasn't for this block. 

So for cutting I didn't like the way the pattern asked us to make the quarter square triangles, so I adjusted the cutting and rounded up to the nearest half inch. 

I then sewed 1/4" on either side of the center of my squares, cut, pressed, and put them on right sides together having a background triangle on each side. Then I sewed on either side of the center on both of these sets. 

I used my 4-in-1 HST tool to square these blocks. I pressed them open, then put the 2" marking through the center and trimmed, I then flipped my square, lined up all the 2" markings and trimmed again. 

To do the flip and stitch corners I didn't even use my Folded Corner Clipper, shocking I know. 

I lined my squares up on my rectangles and used my Diagonal seam tape, ensuring the corner of the squares followed the red line on the tape.

The petal component I constructed exactly as the pattern shows us, just make sure that quarter square triangle is flipped the right way when you begin. 

Since we have to start stitching 1/4" away from the edge of the center square to construct the block, I drew a line 1/4" away from the edge of all 4 sides, this helped me make sure I stopped at the right point.

These partial seams are the part where I normally would've looked at the pattern and put it away, but since it was just one block, and I need it for the quilt I figured I better try it, and it wasn't as scary as I thought.

My finished block is below, and I love how it turned out!
